Heydrich rose to become chief of the Reich Security Main Office in September 1939, commanding the Gestapo, Kripo, and SD. He founded the Sicherheitsdienst, an intelligence arm that neutralised resistance through arrests, deportations, and murder. He helped organise Kristallnacht in November 1938 and was directly responsible for the Einsatzgruppen, mobile killing units that murdered over two million people, including 1.3 million Jews, by mass shooting and gassing. Appointed Deputy Reich-Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, he suppressed Czech culture and executed resistance members. On 27 May 1942, Czech and Slovak soldiers trained by British intelligence ambushed him in Prague during Operation Anthropoid. He died of sepsis from his wounds on 4 June. In reprisal, the Nazis razed the villages of Lidice and Ležáky, shooting the males and deporting most women and children to concentration camps.
