About

Born into a political family on 24 March 1949, Wickremesinghe qualified as a lawyer in 1972 and entered parliament in 1977 with the United National Party, which he has led since 1994. His first turn as prime minister came in 1993 after President Ranasinghe Premadasa's assassination. He lost presidential bids in 1999 and 2005, then returned as prime minister in 2015 under Maithripala Sirisena — a tenure that ended in constitutional crisis when Sirisena sacked him in 2018, a move the Supreme Court reversed.
