NKVD agent, murderer of Leon Trotsky
He drove an ice axe into Leon Trotsky's skull in Mexico City in 1940, ending the revolutionary's life and sealing his own name to one of the century's coldest political murders.
Born in Barcelona in February 1913, Ramón Mercader became a Spanish communist and NKVD agent tasked with eliminating Stalin's exiled rival. In August 1940 he struck Trotsky with an ice axe in Mexico City, was caught at the scene, and spent the next 19 years and 8 months in a Mexican prison. Released in 1960, he was flown to Moscow and awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union and the Order of Lenin — Stalin's state honouring the killer it had sent. He lived out his years moving between the Soviet Union, Cuba, and Czechoslovakia, dying in October 1978.
