In 1346 he commanded the English army that decisively defeated a Scottish invasion at the Battle of Neville's Cross near Durham, capturing King David II of Scotland. By the mid-14th century the Nevilles had also assumed responsibilities in naval defence, holding the post of Admiral of the North.
