Wife of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev (1932-1999)
Wife of the last Soviet leader, she stepped into a role no Kremlin spouse had occupied in public before — visible, active, and unapologetically present while the empire came apart.
Raisa Maximovna Titarenko was born on 5 January 1932. She married Mikhail Gorbachev and became the Soviet Union's most prominent first lady, a break from decades of invisible political wives. While her husband presided over perestroika and the unraveling of the USSR, she raised funds for Russian cultural preservation, supported new talent, and built treatment programs for children with blood cancer. She died on 20 September 1999, outliving the country she'd watched transform.
