A Frankish monk who became the intellectual architect of ninth-century education, writing an encyclopedia, Bible commentaries, and grammar treatises that earned him the title "teacher of Germany."
Rabanus Maurus Magnentius was born around 780 and entered the Benedictine order, where his range became extraordinary: theologian, poet, encyclopedist, military writer. He authored De rerum naturis, an encyclopedia on the natures of things, and produced treatises on education and grammar alongside extensive biblical commentaries. His work during the Carolingian age made him one of its most prominent teachers and writers, recognized as "Praeceptor Germaniae."
