About this person
Rabanus Maurus Magnentius was born around 780 and entered the Benedictine order, where his range became extraordinary: theologian, poet, encyclopedist, military writer. He authored De rerum naturis, an encyclopedia on the natures of things, and produced treatises on education and grammar alongside extensive biblical commentaries. His work during the Carolingian age made him one of its most prominent teachers and writers, recognized as "Praeceptor Germaniae." He rose to archbishop of Mainz in East Francia, a position he held until his death on 4 February 856. The Roman Martyrology now lists him as a saint, his feast day marking the close of a life spent ordering knowledge for a continent.
