Roman emperor (270)
A Roman emperor whose reign lasted weeks. Quintillus took the throne after his brother died in 270, only to be swept aside when the legions chose Aurelian instead. The sources can't agree on how he died — suicide, battle, or murder by his own men.
Marcus Aurelius Claudius Quintillus came to power in 270 following the death of his brother, Emperor Claudius Gothicus. His hold on Rome proved brief. Within weeks, Aurelian — commanding legions of his own — was proclaimed rival emperor, and Quintillus found himself overthrown. What happened next remains unclear: the ancient accounts diverge, reporting variously that he killed himself, fell fighting Aurelian, or was murdered by soldiers who had turned. By any version, 270 closed with Quintillus dead and Aurelian ascending.
