Summary
Updated 2026-06-09

She raised the last Habsburg emperor—the man who would watch an empire dissolve in 1918. Her son Charles inherited a throne already cracking, and she lived long enough to see what became of it.

Biography

About

Born 31 May 1867, Maria Josepha was the fifth child of George of Saxony and Infanta Maria Anna of Portugal. She married into the Habsburg line and became mother to Charles, who would ascend as Emperor of Austria-Hungary in the middle of the First World War. Charles took the throne in 1916 and lost it two years later when the empire collapsed. Maria Josepha died 28 May 1944, three days before her 77th birthday, having outlived the world her son was born to rule.
