Born Lady Alice Christabel Montagu-Douglas-Scott on 25 December 1901, she was the daughter of the 7th Duke of Buccleuch, Scotland's largest landowner. Her marriage to Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester — third son of King George V and Queen Mary — made her a princess and tied her to the inner circle: sister-in-law to two kings, Edward VIII and George VI, and aunt by marriage to Elizabeth II.
