Premchand is read about 340 times a day, in 71 languages.
A typical day, 30 days to 23 October 2026
The middle day of the days counted, so one week of news cannot move it. The line under it is the last 398 days, one point a day.
Something wrong?Premchand wrote what polite society preferred to ignore: caste hierarchies, the grinding exploitation of labourers, the trap women lived in. He did it in Hindi and Urdu, languages that hadn't yet carried modern social fiction, and became the subcontinent's most celebrated voice of the early twentieth century.

Dhanpat Rai Srivastava was born 31 July 1880 and took the pen name Premchand. In 1907 he published Soz-e-Watan, five short stories that marked the start. He became a pioneer by writing about the plight of those the late 1880s preferred not to see - labourers, women, the bottom rungs of caste - in Hindi and Urdu, making social fiction in languages that had rarely carried it. Over three decades he produced more than a dozen novels, around 300 short stories, essays, and translations of Indian and foreign works into Hindi, including Godaan, Karmabhoomi, Gaban, Mansarovar, and Idgah. He died 8 October 1936, having built the foundation of modern Hindustani literature.
