Second wife of the Emperor Nero (30-65 AD)
Nero's second wife, who climbed from one emperor's bed to another's throne through what the ancient sources called beauty and cunning — then died at 35, possibly kicked to death while pregnant.
Born in 30 AD, Poppaea Sabina first married the man who would become emperor Otho. She then married Nero, becoming empress of Rome. Ancient historians described her as a woman of striking beauty who maneuvered her way into power through intrigue. She died in 65 AD at age 35. A vast villa at Oplontis near Pompeii carries her name today, its excavated rooms still bearing witness to the world she inhabited before Vesuvius buried it thirteen years after her death.
