Pope and Bishop of Rome from 189 to 199
Pope from Roman Africa who held the seat of Peter in the late second century — a Berber bishop steering the church through doctrinal storms when Christianity was still an underground faith.
Born in the Roman Province of Africa, Victor rose to become Bishop of Rome around 189, one of the earliest popes whose origin lay outside Italy. His tenure came during a period when the church was still forming its identity under imperial suspicion, navigating questions of practice and belief across a scattered network of communities. He died in 199. Later generations named him a saint and martyr, his feast day fixed to 28 July.
