Sergius II became bishop of Rome in January 844, assuming leadership of both the church and the Papal States. His three-year pontificate was marked by the Arab raid against Rome, an incursion that exposed the city's vulnerability. In the aftermath, he oversaw efforts to redevelop Rome and shore up what the attack had damaged. He died on 27 January 847, leaving behind a papacy defined by crisis and reconstruction.
