Pope
A seventh-century pope who held the chair of Peter for seventeen months during a stretch when Rome answered to Constantinople, and whose brief reign left little mark beyond the dates.
Sabinian became bishop of Rome on 13 September 604, the fourth former papal ambassador to Constantinople to ascend to the office. His pontificate unfolded under Eastern Roman dominance of the papacy, a period when imperial politics shaped the church as much as theology did. He died on 22 February 606, having served less than a year and a half.
