Twenty-six days. That's how long Francesco Todeschini-Piccolomini lasted as Pope Pius III before death ended what had barely begun. Elected in September 1503 as a compromise between warring Vatican factions, the frail 64-year-old announced reforms he'd never live to see.
Born Francesco Todeschini on 9 May 1439, he became the nephew who mattered when his uncle ascended as Pope Pius II and handed him both the Piccolomini surname and the Archbishop of Siena seat at twenty-one. He spent decades as a papal legate, moving between assignments, building a career in the Church's diplomatic corps. By 1503 he was Cardinal Piccolomini, elderly and visibly weakening, which made him the safe middle ground when the Borgia and della Rovere camps deadlocked over the papal throne that September.
