Pope of the Catholic Church from 1464 to 1471
A merchant's nephew who pivoted to the priesthood when his uncle became pope, then climbed to the papacy himself — where he spent seven years amassing one of the era's great art collections.
Pietro Barbo was born on 23 February 1417 and originally trained as a merchant. When his maternal uncle became Pope Eugene IV, Barbo abandoned commerce for religious studies and rose through the Church with uncommon speed. On 30 August 1464, he was elected pope, taking the name Paul II. His seven-year reign is remembered less for doctrine than for his obsessive collecting: he built a formidable trove of art and antiquities. He died on 26 July 1471.
