Bishop of Rome from 514 to 523
He spent his papacy trying to end a thirty-five-year split between Rome and Constantinople — and won. On a March morning in 519, the reunion was sealed in front of a packed cathedral, closing the Acacian schism that had fractured the church since 484.
Hormisdas became bishop of Rome in July 514, inheriting a church divided. The Acacian schism had begun three decades earlier when Acacius of Constantinople tried to appease Christians who rejected the Council of Chalcedon's teachings. Hormisdas spent his papacy working to heal the break. On 28 March 519, the effort paid off: the reunion between Constantinople and Rome was ratified in Constantinople's cathedral before a large crowd. He held the office until his death in August 523.
