A third-century bishop of Rome who steered the church through Christological crisis, convincing a Roman emperor to settle a doctrinal dispute halfway across the empire.
Born in Rome, Felix assumed the bishopric on 5 January 269, succeeding Pope Dionysius into a church wrestling with the nature of Christ. His papacy turned on a confrontation with Paul of Samosata, bishop of Antioch, whose denial of Christ's divinity threatened orthodox teaching. Felix's theological argument reached Emperor Aurelian, who intervened to depose Paul and restore doctrinal unity. Felix is also linked to the practice of celebrating Mass over martyrs' tombs, though historians still debate whether he truly instituted it.
