Bishop of Rome from c. 174 to 189
A second-century bishop of Rome remembered less for what he did than for what legend attached to him: a letter, possibly apocryphal, from a British king asking for Christian instruction.
Eleutherius became bishop of Rome around 174 and held the office until his death on 24 May 189, though some sources place his pontificate between 171–185 or 177–193. His tenure sits in the early centuries of the Church, when records were sparse and myth easily filled the gaps. The most persistent story links him to a letter from "Lucius, King of Britain," a figure whose historical existence remains uncertain. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. No other pope has taken his name since.
