Pope
A Bavarian bishop who held the papacy for twenty-three days in 1048 — shorter than most product launch cycles — dying before he could settle into the job or leave much imprint beyond the fact of his name in the list.
Poppo von Brixen was a German bishop nominated by Emperor Henry III after the death of Clement II. While envoys traveled to confirm the appointment, the deposed Benedict IX seized the throne again with help from Margrave Boniface III of Tuscany. Henry demanded Boniface reverse course and install Poppo or face imperial wrath. Poppo took office as Damasus II in mid-July 1048. He died in Palestrina on 9 August, twenty-three days in, leaving behind the distinction of being the third German pope and one of the briefest reigns on record.
