Pope of the Catholic Church from 1303 to 1304
He held the papacy for less than nine months. Nicola Boccasini rose through the Dominican order to cardinal, witnessed French forces attack his predecessor at Anagni, then died eight months after his own election in 1303.
Nicola Boccasini entered the Order of Preachers in Treviso in 1240, studied at Venice and Milan, and became a teacher in Dominican houses across northern Italy. He served two terms as Provincial Prior of Lombardy before his election as Master of the Order in 1296. Made cardinal two years later, he was appointed Bishop of Ostia and sent as papal legate to Hungary, then France. He was present when French forces attacked Pope Boniface VIII at Anagni. Elected pope on 22 October 1303, he died on 7 July 1304. Pope Clement XII confirmed his cultus in 1736.
