Born around 980 to Count Gregory I of Tusculum, Theophylact belonged to a noble line that had already produced popes John XI, John XII, and Benedict VII across the previous century. On 18 May 1012, he became bishop of Rome and ruler of the Papal States, taking the name Benedict VIII.
