Pope
His papacy lasted thirty-two days before an emperor ended it. Benedict V held Rome in 964 against a rival pope until Otto I arrived with an army, stripped him of office, and sent him into exile.
Benedict V became pope on 22 May 964 during the Saeculum obscurum, a stretch of Roman church history marked by political chaos and contested succession. He stood in opposition to Leo VIII, meaning two men claimed the throne at once. The contest ended when Emperor Otto I marched into Rome and overthrew him on 23 June. Deposed after just over a month, Benedict V died in exile the following year on 4 July 965.
