3rd pope and bishop of Rome from c. 79 to c. 92 AD
Third bishop of Rome after Peter and Linus, he divided the city into twenty-five parishes and ordained priests through a pontificate that ended in martyrdom around AD 91.
Born around AD 15, Anacletus was a Roman who rose to lead the church in Rome around AD 80, succeeding Linus in the line that began with Peter. During roughly twelve years as pope, he structured the Christian community by establishing about twenty-five parishes across the city and ordaining clergy to serve them. The work came during a period when Roman authorities still viewed the faith with suspicion. He died a martyr sometime near AD 91, the circumstances lost to history but the fact preserved in church memory. His name appears in the Roman Canon of the mass, and April 26 marks his feast day.
