Pope
The first priest in over eighty years to reach the papacy, ending a long stretch when bishops and deacons held the chair of Peter.
Born in 570, Adeodatus became bishop of Rome on 19 October 615, breaking a pattern that had lasted since 533: he was the first priest elected pope in more than eight decades. His brief reign introduced the use of lead seals — bullae — on papal documents, a practice that would endure for centuries. He died on 8 November 618, after just three years in office. His feast day remains 8 November.
