Biography

About

Born into landed nobility in 1842, Kropotkin served as a Tsarist officer and led geological expeditions across Siberia before his thinking turned. Arrested for activism in 1874, he escaped prison two years later and began 41 years of exile that took him through Switzerland, France (including nearly four years in jail), and England. During that stretch he wrote The Conquest of Bread in 1892, Fields, Factories, and Workshops in 1899, and Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution in 1902 — the latter his attempt to ground anarchist communism in science, not sentiment. He returned to Russia after the 1917…
