Patrick Modiano was born in Paris on 30 July 1945, just after the Liberation, and grew up haunted by the war he never lived through. He turned that fixation into a singular literary method: autofiction, blending autobiography with historical invention to probe what people remembered, forgot, or chose to hide about Occupation France.
