Patrick Modiano was born in Paris on 30 July 1945, just after the Liberation, and grew up haunted by the war he never lived through. He turned that fixation into a singular literary method: autofiction, blending autobiography with historical invention to probe what people remembered, forgot, or chose to hide about Occupation France. His first major recognition came in 1972 with the Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française for Les Boulevards de ceinture, followed by the 1978 Prix Goncourt for Rue des boutiques obscures. Decades of steady, obsessive work - more than 40 novels exploring loyalty, loss, and the unreliability of the past - brought comparisons to Proust and prizes across Europe, including the 2010 Prix mondial Cino Del Duca and the 2012 Austrian State Prize. The Nobel committee gave him literature's highest honour in 2014, and only then did English translations begin to catch up to a career the French-speaking world had quietly revered for years.
