He was the longest-tenured member of the NHL's Boston Bruins at the time of his departure from North American play in 2009, having been with the Boston team from 1997-2009. Axelsson represented Sweden internationally in multiple competitions and helped them with a gold medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics.
