Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir, born 1 January 1944, seized power in 1989 as a brigadier general, leading officers who ousted Sudan's democratically elected government after it opened talks with southern rebels. He won three presidential elections marked by fraud allegations and founded the National Congress Party in 1998, which dominated until his fall. His government negotiated the 2005 end to the Second Sudanese Civil War, leading to South Sudan's independence, but in Darfur he oversaw a war that displaced 2.5 million from a population of 6.2 million and sparked an ICC arrest warrant in March…
