The eighth Ilkhan of Mongol Ilkhanate (1304–1316)
An eighth Ilkhanid ruler who held Tabriz for twelve years in the early fourteenth century, bearing a Mongolian name meaning "blessed" and governing a fragment of the empire his great-great-grandfather Genghis Khan had carved across Asia.
Born in March 1282, Öljaitü was the son of Ilkhan Arghun and great-grandson of Hulegu Khan, who had founded the Ilkhanate decades earlier. When his brother Mahmud Ghazan died in 1304, Öljaitü inherited the throne and ruled from Tabriz. His dual names reflected the hybrid world he governed: Öljaitü, "blessed" in Mongolian, paired with the Persian Khodabandeh, "God's servant." He held power for twelve years until his death in December 1316, the eighth in a line tracing back five generations to Genghis Khan.
