About this person

Oliver Laurence North was born October 7, 1943, served in Vietnam, and by the 1980s sat on the National Security Council staff. There he helped orchestrate the Iran-Contra affair: arms sold illegally to Iran in hopes of freeing hostages in Lebanon, with proceeds diverted to Contra fighters in Nicaragua despite a congressional ban under the Boland Amendment. Granted limited immunity to testify, he was convicted on three felony counts in 1989, but the convictions were vacated and dismissed two years later. He ran for Senate in Virginia in 1994 and lost to Chuck Robb by under three points. From 1995 he hosted a talk show on Radio America, then War Stories with Oliver North on Fox News from 2001 to 2016. In May 2018 the National Rifle Association elected him president; he resigned eleven months later in a fight with Wayne LaPierre.
