A French writer who managed the rare trick of pleasing both the masses and the avant-garde by writing novels that didn't look away from violence, abuse, and the cold mechanics of detachment.

Biography

About

Octave Henri Marie Mirbeau was born on 16 February 1848 and spent his career working across forms — novels, art criticism, travel writing, pamphlets, journalism, plays. He became a celebrity across Europe by writing transgressive fiction that explored the darker currents of human behavior without flinching. The work found readers in both popular and experimental circles, a balance few writers strike. He died on his birthday in 1917, sixty-nine years to the day after he was born. His books have since been translated into thirty languages.
