Danish painter, sculptor and architect (1743–1809)
The Danish painter who built neoclassical scenes for kings and taught anatomy to the next generation — then watched some of his palace work burn in 1794.
Nicolai Abraham Abildgaard was born on 11 September 1743 and trained in the neoclassical mode that would define his career. He rose to professor at the New Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen, teaching painting, mythology, and anatomy while working as both painter, sculptor, and architect. His commissions filled the royal palaces: Christiansborg, Fredensborg, Levetzau at Amalienborg. In 1794 fire tore through Christiansborg and took some of his work with it. He continued until his death on 4 June 1809, having shaped Danish art from the inside out.
