Ned Kelly is read about 1,660 times a day, in 42 languages.
A typical day, 30 days to 20 October 2026
The middle day of the days counted, so one week of news cannot move it. The line under it is the last 395 days, one point a day.
Something wrong? An Australian outlaw who walked into his last gunfight wearing homemade steel armour, shot three policemen dead, held a town hostage, and was hanged at 25 - then became the country's most written-about figure and a national argument that never ends.

Edward Kelly was born in rural Victoria in December 1854, third of eight children to Irish parents, his father a transported convict who died when Kelly was 12. Poor selectors who saw themselves persecuted by squatters and police, the family watched Kelly cycle through arrests and prison stretches - the longest from 1871 to 1874 - before he joined the Greta Mob, bush larrikins known for stock theft. A violent clash with police at the family home in 1878 sent Kelly into the bush with his brother Dan and two others; after they shot three policemen, Victoria proclaimed them outlaws. For two years they evaded capture with help from sympathisers, raiding towns, killing an informer, and issuing a manifesto that denounced the police, the government, and the Empire itself. In 1880 they tried to derail a police train bound for Benalla; tipped off, police cornered them at Glenrowan, where the gang wore armour cut from plough mouldboards and held a hotel full of hostages through a 12-hour siege.
