About

Necho II ruled Egypt's 26th Dynasty from 610 to 595 BC, launching construction projects across his kingdom and commissioning what Herodotus claimed was a three-year Phoenician circumnavigation of Africa via the Red Sea and back through Gibraltar. He threw himself into Near Eastern geopolitics, campaigning in Asia to block the Neo-Babylonian Empire's westward push and secure the Euphrates trade route. The Babylonians caught him off guard and drove the Egyptians out of Syria entirely. His own son, Psammetichus II, may have erased his name from monuments after taking the throne. One Egyptologist…
