About

Born in Vadnagar in 1950, Modi joined the RSS at eight and became a full-time organiser by 1971. Assigned to the BJP in 1985, he rose to general secretary before being appointed Gujarat's chief minister in 2001. His administration was found complicit in the 2002 violence that left up to 2,000 dead, mostly Muslim, though a Supreme Court team found no grounds to prosecute him in 2012. He led the BJP to a parliamentary majority in 2014, the first for any party in three decades.
