About this person
Nabis took the throne in 207 BC by killing two rival claimants and set about restoring Sparta's fading strength. He allied with Philip V of Macedon during the Second Macedonian War and was given Argos as payment, but switched sides to Rome when Macedon's fortunes soured. The Romans, prodded by the Achaean League, turned on him after the war and beat him down. In 192 BC the Aetolian League finished the job with a knife, closing Sparta's last chapter as a power that mattered.
