Bush farmer, actor
A bush farmer from Namibia who became the center of a global comedy phenomenon without ever seeking stardom, playing a Kalahari Bushman navigating the absurdity of a Coke bottle falling from the sky.
Nǃxau ǂToma was born around 1944 and lived as a farmer in the Namibian bush before being cast in The Gods Must Be Crazy in 1980. In the film he played Xixo, a role that made him what The Namibian would call "Namibia's most famous actor" despite having no prior connection to cinema. He reprised the character in sequels, carrying a story that reached audiences worldwide while he remained rooted in a life far from Hollywood. He died on 5 July 2003.
