About this person

Musaylima ibn Habib came from the Banu Hanifa tribe and operated from Diriyah, in what is now Riyadh. He claimed prophethood around the same time Islam was consolidating power in Arabia, positioning himself as a rival to Muhammad. He composed his teachings in saj', the rhymed prose style traditional to pre-Islamic oratory. When Muhammad died, Musaylima became a central figure in the Ridda wars - the campaigns against tribes that had broken with the new Islamic state. He led forces against the caliphate until he was killed in battle in 632, his name preserved in Islamic memory as Musaylima al-Kadhab: Musaylima the Liar.
