7th-century Arabian self-proclaimed prophet
A 7th-century Arabian who declared himself a prophet in direct opposition to Muhammad, sparking armed conflict that ended with his death in 632. Muslims have called him "the Arch-Liar" ever since.
Musaylima ibn Habib came from the Banu Hanifa tribe and operated from Diriyah, in what is now Riyadh. He claimed prophethood around the same time Islam was consolidating power in Arabia, positioning himself as a rival to Muhammad. He composed his teachings in saj', the rhymed prose style traditional to pre-Islamic oratory. When Muhammad died, Musaylima became a central figure in the Ridda wars — the campaigns against tribes that had broken with the new Islamic state.
