Saudi businessman (1908–1967)
The patriarch who built a construction empire in Saudi Arabia and became the kingdom's wealthiest commoner — and whose name carried no weight in the West until his son Osama planned the September 11 attacks.
Born in Yemen around 1908, Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden moved to Saudi Arabia and founded a construction business that would grow into the Saudi Binladin Group. His work in the industry made him the richest non-royal in the kingdom, establishing a family fortune and name that carried significant prestige within Saudi society. He died on 3 September 1967. Two decades later, the bin Laden name would become globally known through his son Osama, who planned the September 11 attacks.
