The last Shah of Iran ruled for 37 years, pouring billions into infrastructure and defence until his country became one of the fastest-growing economies on earth and fielded the world's fifth-strongest military. The 1979 revolution ended the monarchy and sent him into exile.
Mohammad Reza Pahlavi took the throne in 1941 after the Anglo-Soviet invasion forced his father's abdication.
