Born Athar in 1902, Hatta turned toward nationalist politics early, agitating in both the Netherlands and the Indies with enough intensity that the colonial government sent him to the Boven Digoel concentration camp. Released, he joined Sukarno in the push for independence, and when the moment came in 1945 he was the second signature on the proclamation - the co-founder. He served as vice president from the start and later as the third prime minister, steering the young republic through its national revolution. By the time he left office, the country he had fought to create was standing. He died in 1980.
