Born 7 November 1978, Aboutrika came up through Egyptian football and settled into Al Ahly's midfield, where vision and timing made him the team's creative axis. In 2006 he lifted the Africa Cup with Egypt and helped Al Ahly to bronze at the FIFA Club World Cup. Two years later he scored the goal that won Egypt a second straight continental title, then took African Footballer of the Year honors in the same breath. Nominated again in 2013, he retired having moved between midfield and forward with equal ease. Away from the pitch he built a second profile through humanitarian work and philanthropy across Egypt.
