Mira Murati was born in Albania on 16 December 1988 and moved to the U.S., where she worked as a product manager at Tesla and later led product and engineering at Leap Motion. In May 2022 she became chief technology officer at OpenAI, a role that put her at the center of the company's rapid expansion. In November 2023, when the board briefly removed Sam Altman, she served three days as interim chief executive before his return. She left OpenAI in September 2024. In February 2025 she co-founded Thinking Machines Lab, her own artificial intelligence company.
