Mike Horn
South African-Swiss explorer · South Africa · Born 1965 · age 61
Mike Horn is read about 236 times a day, in 10 languages.
A typical day, 30 days to 15 October 2026
The middle day of the days counted, so one week of news cannot move it. The line under it is the last 390 days, one point a day.
Something wrong?A solo year and a half on foot around the equator, no motors. Then two years circling the Arctic alone. Then the North Pole in winter darkness with one partner, no dogs, no machines. Horn builds his reputation by stripping away every comfort and seeing what's left.

About this person
Born in Johannesburg in 1966, Horn studied Human Movement Science at Stellenbosch before relocating to Switzerland. The 2001 equator journey - 18 months without engines - made his name. Three years later he spent over two years circumnavigating the Arctic Circle solo. In 2006 he and Norwegian explorer Børge Ousland reached the North Pole in permanent winter darkness, the first to do it without dogs or motors. He lives now in Château d'Œx, a long way from anywhere warm.
