About

Born 20 April 1960, Díaz-Canel is a Cuban politician and engineer who joined the Politburo in 2003 and climbed steadily: Minister of Higher Education from 2009 to 2012, then Vice President of the Council of Ministers, then First Vice President of the Council of State in 2013. In 2018 he succeeded Raúl Castro as President of the Council of State, and when Cuba enacted a new constitution in 2019 he became the 17th president of Cuba — the first head of state since 1976 from outside the Castro family.
