He built the desktop Linux users actually wanted, then spent years reverse-engineering Microsoft's stack so .NET code could run anywhere - a bet that eventually paid off when Microsoft bought the whole thing.

About this person
Miguel de Icaza was born November 23, 1972. He started GNOME, the graphical interface that made Linux approachable beyond the command line. Later he launched Mono, an open-source implementation of Microsoft's .NET framework - controversial at the time, pragmatic in hindsight. That work led to Xamarin, which let developers write mobile apps in C# for both iOS and Android. Microsoft acquired Xamarin in 2016, folding de Icaza's decade-long workaround back into the mothership.
