Verónica Michelle Bachelet Jeria was born 29 September 1951 and trained as a physician, also studying military strategy before entering politics. She served as Health Minister and then Defense Minister under President Ricardo Lagos, becoming the first woman to hold Chile's defense portfolio. In 2006 she won the presidency with 54% of the vote, the first woman ever elected to lead the country. After her first term ended in 2010, she was appointed the first executive director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.
