A Byzantine soldier who plotted his way from a death sentence to the throne by orchestrating his emperor's assassination on Christmas morning, then spent most of his reign fighting a rebel who nearly took it all back.
Born in Amorium around 770, Michael rose through the military ranks alongside Leo V the Armenian, helping him overthrow Emperor Michael I Rhangabe in 813. The alliance soured: Leo sentenced Michael to death, but Michael turned conspirator and had Leo killed at Christmas 820, seizing the throne himself. Almost immediately Thomas the Slav launched a revolt so dangerous it nearly ended Michael's rule, dragging on until spring 824.
