Born in Amorium around 770, Michael rose through the military ranks alongside Leo V the Armenian, helping him overthrow Emperor Michael I Rhangabe in 813. The alliance soured: Leo sentenced Michael to death, but Michael turned conspirator and had Leo killed at Christmas 820, seizing the throne himself. Almost immediately Thomas the Slav launched a revolt so dangerous it nearly ended Michael's rule, dragging on until spring 824. The breathing room didn't last - his reign's final years saw two catastrophic losses that would haunt Byzantium for generations: Muslims began their conquest of Sicily, and Andalusian pirates took Crete. At home, he backed the resumed policy of iconoclasm that Leo had revived. He died on 2 October 829, first of the Amorian dynasty.
