You were compelled to?' he repeated.
German writer (1929–1995)
He wrote the book that made a generation understand what it means when a story eats itself — The Neverending Story, where a boy reads about a boy reading, and a world dies from lost imagination.
Born in Germany on 12 November 1929, Ende grew up to write fantasy that moved like philosophy dressed in children's clothes. The Neverending Story arrived as his epic, adapted to film in the 1980s and later to animated television in 1995. Before that came Momo and Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver, books that found their way into more than 40 languages and past 35 million copies sold. He died on 28 August 1995, leaving a shelf of work that treated young readers as if they could handle weight.
